Military Sea Transportation Service Troop Ships
The Military Sea Transportation Service
nucleus fleet consists
of United States Government-owned ships in the custody of the
Navy that are assigned to MSTS
for operation and administration. Ships in the fleet are
identified are classified by standard Navy letter and numeral
groups. Troop ships have a T-AP (personnel transport)
designation, T-AO are tankers, and T-AG are special project
ships.

General C. G. Morton
(T-AP-138)
Built in 1944 by Kaiser Co., Richmond. Calif. Named in honor
of Major Gen. Charles Gould Morton, class
of 1883, U. S. Military Academy, who served in the
Spanish-American War and later on the Texas border. |

Edwin D. Patrick (T-AP 124)
Named in honor of Gen. E. D. Patrick, who was division commander
in the Philippines during WW II. Dimensions: 608 feet
long, 75 feet wide, cruising speed 20 knots. |

George M. Randall (T-AP 115)
The ship was named for General George Morton Randall, and
placed in commission in 1944. Built by Federal
Shipbuilding and Dry Dock Company, Kearny, New Jersey. The
Randall was part of the Military Sea Transportation Service
fleet transports troops and dependents. Ship dimensions:
622 feet long, 76 feet wide and displace 20,175 tons. |

H.B. Freeman (T-AP 143)
Built in 1945 by Kaiser Co., Inc.,
Richmond, Calif. The vessel was named in honor of Major
General Henry Blanchard Freeman, U. S. Army, who distinguished
himself in the Civil War and who also served through various
Indian campaigns and in the Spanish-American War. |

H.F. Hodges (T-AP 144)
Built in 1945 by Kaiser Co.,
Inc., Richmond, Calif. This C4 type troopship was named in honor
of Major General Harry Foote Hodges, Class of 1881, U. S.
Military Academy, who served in the Spanish-American War and
with the AEF in World War 1. General Hodges engaged in extensive
River and Harbor work during most of his Army career.

Hugh J. Gaffey (T-AP 121)
The ship was built in Alameda, Calif., in 1944 Admiral class P-2
ship Admiral W. D. Capps (AP-121). She was reacquired by
the Navy from the Army Transport Service as General Hugh J.
Gaffey March 1950 and assigned to Military Sea Transportation
Service. |

J. C. Breckinridge (T-AP 176)
The ship was named for James Carson Breckinridge. U.S.M.C., and
placed in commission in 1945. Built by Federal
Shipbuilding and Dry Dock Company, Kearny, New Jersey. The
Breckinridge was part of the Military Sea Transportation Service
fleet transports troops and dependents. Ship dimensions:
622 feet long, 75 feet wide and displace 19,650 tons.

John Pope (T-AP 110)
Named in honor of Gen. John Pope,
class of 1842, U. S. Military Academy, who served in the
Mexican and Civil Wars, assisted with surveying the Pacific
Railroad across the country, and later surveyed part of the
northwest boundary between the United States and Canada. |
